This year thanksgiving is late, and Wisconsin has 13 weeks of school before break. I had the mid-semester blahs, so I decided to take a couple voluntary days off school and come to Salt Lake City! Dr. Hottie had the day off work yesterday, so naturally an adventure was in store. Ever since he started residency, we have made an effort to make as many off days as possible something special. When you have such little time with your significant other, I think its important to take advantage of time off together- it helps keeps our spirits up and sure is fun. I arrived on Halloween, and told Dr. Hottie to buy candy in case we get trick-or-treaters. Well...this is how much candy we had to start and end the evening. Yea, 0 trick-or-treaters- very sad. I blame it on Dr. Hottie just having 1 sad uncarved pumpkin out front.
Friday, we started the day at one of our favorite breakfast places in town- the Park Cafe. Dr. Hottie had a monstrosity of a breakfast and I had granola & yogurt.
We then headed to Big Cottonwood Canyon for a late fall hike. When you're in the valley, you can see that the mountains have gotten some snow-but it looks like a small dusting. What we found out yesterday is that it is MUCH more than just a dusting. We started the hike in about 1 inch of snow and at the top of the hike we were in 2 feet of snow! It was crazy but really beautiful- my 1st snow of the season!
At the end of the hike we saw these guys by the road! They are HUGE!
We ended the day with a nice home-cooked fish stew. It was an awesome day, and was totally worth missing class for.
Finally, my motivation to work out has been sub-par lately. School and research have been intense, and I've been doing short workouts by feel. Most of the time I will either do a short circuit, go for a mindless 45 min run, or go to swim practice. Because my racing days are largely over, I don't plan a specific time of the year as an "off season". However, there's usually a couple months out of the year where my body tells me its time to just be active and lay off the intensity for awhile. I guess that time is now which is actually perfect with a lot of travel and family time coming up. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend- and happy November!
