This week we went to the Banff Film Festival on the University of Utah campus. I first heard about it from a friend who went to a screening in Madison last year- it sounded amazing and I was sold. Its a series of short films all of which have an outdoor/adventure/sports theme.
My favorite film was The Sufferfest. It was about 2 friends who decided to free climb all the 14,000 foot peaks in CA...and the kicker was they rode their bikes in between each peak. At one point in the film they were asked, "are you having fun?". They admitted that, no, they weren't having what you would refer to as traditional "fun", but there should be different definitions of fun- like type 2 or type 3 fun. Often times, a physical challenge is not your typical fun time - but I'm absolutely a fan of the type of fun that involves a bit of suffering- lets call it type 2 fun.
In line with the alternative fun theme- Dr.H & I have both scheduled a week of vacation together in early June. We are planning a section hike in the Great Smoky Mountains- Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap- a total of ~30miles. It's supposed to be one of the most beautiful sections of the Appalachian Trail- it could be rainy, humid, and buggy but I'm ready to embrace a bit of type 2 fun!
